Is Real Estate Investing a Woman's Place?

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

Spoiler Alert: Of Course It Is!

As women, we get told there are so many things that we CAN’T do.

Sometimes, this is explicitly said, while other times, it’s just implied. There are dozens of male-dominated industries out there that are simply out of touch with the times.

We NEED more women in real estate investment! Here’s why!

How Far We’ve Come

Did you know that less than 100 years ago, women weren’t legally considered “persons” in Canada? Women couldn’t be appointed to the Senate, and they were limited in their opportunities in both their public and political lives. Emily Murphy and a brave group of Canadian women fought to change this state of affairs. They fought the Canadian Supreme Court, all the way to the Committee of The British Privy Council in the U.K. for their right to be recognized as a person. And on October 18th, 1929, they succeeded. Here is the Canadian Heritage Minute about the case if you want a nice boost of nostalgia!

In 1992, the Government of Canada announced that October would be designated as Women’s History Month, celebrating Canadian women’s achievements throughout our history. This idea is also honoured on two days of the month: the International Day of the Girl on October 11th and Persons Day on October 18th.

The “Persons” case may have changed the law, but there was still a long way to go to change attitudes among many Canadians. Even today, many women find themselves locked out of career advancement due to poor circumstances, a lack of financial privilege, or simple sexism.

The Current State of Things

If you look at the real estate industry across North America, there are countless incredibly successful female realtors and brokers. But surprisingly, those same numbers aren’t there for women investors. This goes for both real estate investment AND the stock market.

In a 2018 study by Fidelity Investments, it’s shown that only 29% of women see themselves as investors, but 72% of women want to make their money grow. And we all know the best way to do that is through investing in real estate!

Men and women balance any number of responsibilities: children, home management, career, health, parents, community, and so much more.
